EASTON, Pa. –
The Lafayette softball program has released its 2019 schedule which features 55 games and includes three March tournaments at Elon, George Mason and South Florida.
The Leopards, under second-year head coach Caitlyn de la Haba
are scheduled to open the season in late February, traveling to Coppin State in Baltimore for a three-game series Feb. 23-24.
March is the busiest month of the season, featuring 18 dates and 28 games in that 31-day span. The month opens with four games in the Elon University Phoenix Invitational in Elon, North Carolina. Lafayette plays the host on Friday, March 1, faces Oakland and La Salle on Saturday and concludes the weekend against Elon on Sunday.
A mid-week doubleheader at Atlantic 10 foe Fordham follows on March 6. Lafayette will then play five games at the Cherry Blossom Classic hosted by George Mason University on March 8-10. The Leopards play George Mason and Marshall twice while also facing Monmouth. The tournament is a homecoming of sorts for de la Haba who spent two seasons coaching at GMU prior to coming to Lafayette, and the Fairfax, Virginia campus is just 20 miles from her hometown of Ashburn, Virginia.
Lafayette softball will face Penn on March 13 before it travels much farther south to the University of South Florida Tournament. The Leopards will play six games over spring break on March 15-19 in Tampa, Florida, facing Columbia twice and Purdue, Monmouth, Brown and Providence.
The Leopards open their 20-game home slate on March 21 with a single game against Fairfield at 2 p.m. at Metzgar Fields. Patriot League play opens March 23-24 when Lafayette hosts Lehigh in a three-game weekend series. The Leopards then play two at Drexel on March 26 in Philadelphia before hosting Army on March 30-31 to close the month.
The Maroon and White are scheduled to see Atlantic 10 opponent La Salle for the second time in 2019 when the Explorers travel to Easton on April 3. Patriot League play continues at Bucknell April 6-7. Lafayette then will host weekday doubleheaders against Villanova and St. Peter's on April 10-11.
The Leopards' nine-game home stand continues on April 17 with a pair against Monmouth, and reigning Patriot League champ Boston U. closes out the home swing that weekend. A Wednesday twinbill at Fairleigh Dickinson precedes a weekend trip to Colgate on April 27-28. Lafayette took two of three from the Raiders in 2018.
A home doubleheader with Marist opens the month of May, marking the final non-conference competition of the season. Lafayette closes out the regular season at Holy Cross on May 4-5 before the Patriot League Tournament on May 9-11.
