Maroon and White Run Out of Daylight in 8-8 Tie at Drexel

Leopards score two in seventh to send the game to extras

EASTON, Pa. – Lafayette battled to the last pitch in its mid-week doubleheader with Drexel, scoring two runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game and send it to extra innings. The 8-8 score was where it ended, as the teams played two more innings before running out of daylight, resulting in a tie while Lafayette snapped Drexel's six-game winning streak.

The Leopards trailed in the early innings while Drexel (13-10-1) scored three runs over the first two innings. Malori Pojar got things going with an RBI-single in the second inning and then Brooke Wensel led off the fourth inning with a solo shot, her first of the season, to cut the Dragons' lead to 3-2.

That lead ballooned to 6-2 in the bottom of the fourth on Kristi DiMeo's three-run home run. Drexel added single scores in the fifth and sixth innings.

Meanwhile, the Leopards offense started to click in the late innings. Lafayette scored two runs each in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Erica Hanson accounted for a run in the fifth and Lafayette added another on an error. Paige Grover plated two with a two-out single in the sixth.

Lafayette trailed 8-6 entering the Leopards' final scheduled at-bat. Pojar registered her second RBI of the game, plating Brooke Wensel who had reached on a lead-off single. On the same play, Maddie Wensel came home on a Drexel error.

Lafayette starter Kinzi Van Wyk and the defense limited Drexel's opportunities in the eighth and ninth, allowing just one baserunner in each frame. The Leopards had similar offensive output in the final two innings as the game stayed tied at 8-8 until it was called for darkness.

Van Wyk threw all nine innings for Lafayette, allowing seven earned runs on 12 hits with four strikeouts against the 49 batters she faced.

Lafayette (2-20-1) returns to Patriot League play this weekend, hosting Army in a three-game series. First pitch on Saturday and Sunday is slated for noon.
