CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Freshman utility man
Zach Savage has been named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week after some clutch hits and productive starts behind the plate and in the Lafayette infield.
Â
Savage picked up his first career hit in the Liberty Bell Classic semifinal when he singled to centerfield and drove in sophomore
Bill Russo to give the Leopards a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning. He was 2-for-4 while starting at catcher and scoring a run to go along with his RBI, to help Lafayette reach the championship game for the second consecutive year.
Â
The Lewes, Delaware native followed that up with a 2-for-2 day in the series finale against Bucknell with two RBIs and a run, reaching base in all four plate appearances with a pair of walks. Savage showed his versatility, playing second base and making six assists as the Leopards swept the Bison in the three-game set.
Â
This is Lafayette's third Rookie of the Week honor of 2019 as
Justin Johnson picked up the first two earlier in the year. Sophomore
Michael Dunn picked up two wins in the week, tossing 9.1 innings while allowing just one run. He started the Villanova game and went 5.0 innings and followed it up with 4.1 innings of scoreless bullpen work in the middle-game of the Bucknell series.Â
Â
The Leopards return to action with a midweek matchup against Big Ten foe Rutgers on Wednesday afternoon with first pitch slated for 3:35 p.m. at Kamine Stadium.
