LEXINGTON, Va. – Lafayette defeated VMI, 5-0, on Friday afternoon to earn its first win of the 2020 season.
Junior
Ethan Stern led the way for the Maroon and White going 1-for-3 from the plate with three RBIs off a home run in the fifth inning.
Starting pitcher junior
JP Woodward went 6 1/3 innings, striking out three and allowing only two hits with no runs, earning his first win of the season. Senior
Mark Anderson came in and pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief, striking out two and earning the save.
Lafayette (1-3) got its bats moving in the fourth when senior
Mark Glover started the top of the inning off with a single to right field. He was then picked off at first but senior
Trey Durrah responded with a single to right field to put himself on base and then found himself on second after he advanced on a wild pitch.
Senior
Colin Hartey drew a walk to put runners at the corners for senior
Jake Sniegocki but he popped up to VMI's (1-4) first baseman to end the inning.
Freshman
Seif Ingram started off the fifth inning with a single and then advanced to second off a ground out by junior
Michael Landry. Sophomore
Justin Johnson then walked to put runners on first and second for Stern who homered to left center to clear the bases and put the Leopards up by three.
The Leopards added one more run in the top of the seventh inning to extend their lead to five.
VMI threatened in the bottom of the seventh but with runners on second and third, Anderson came in to relieve Woodward, getting the final two outs of the inning and keeping the Keydets scoreless for the rest of the game.
The Leopards and Keydets are set to play the second game of the three-game series tomorrow at 2 p.m. Sunday's first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
