Lafayette Defeats VMI for Series Win

Durrah went 2-for-3 from the plate

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Lafayette College baseball team defeated VMI, 4-2, Sunday afternoon to claim the series win.

The Leopards were led by senior Trey Durrah who went 2-for-3 from the plate with a home run, single and two RBIs. Senior Mark Glover and sophomore Justin Johnson each also recorded an RBI in the win.

Starting pitcher senior Brett Kreyer went 6 2/3 innings, striking out five. Freshman Jordan Yoder earned his first collegiate win and freshman Jake Bloss recorded his first collegiate save.

VMI (2-5) took the lead in the second inning off a two-run home run.

Lafayette (2-5) looked as if it was going to get runs on the board in the third inning when freshman Kyle Chmielewski started off the inning with a double, putting himself in scoring position. But the Leopards' bats couldn't hit anything else that inning, stranding Chmielewski at second.

Durrah's solo home run in the top of the fourth cut the Keydets' lead to one.

Lafayette tied up the game in the fifth inning when senior Drew Jansen started off the inning with a single to center field. He then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Seif Ingram, advanced to third on a wild pitch and then came home on a Johnson groundout to the Keydets shortstop to tie the game up at two each.

Johnson singled to center to start off the eighth for the Leopards. Junior Ethan Stern followed right behind him with a single of his own, advancing Johnson to third. Stern then stole second to put runners on second and third with no outs.

Glover flied out to center, scoring Johnson and then Durrah singled to right, scoring Stern and giving the Leopards the 4-2 lead.

VMI threatened to tie up the game in the bottom of the ninth, putting runners first and second with two outs but Jake Bloss got a pop out to third to end the game and give the Leopards the series victory.

Up next for the Leopards is a Tuesday game with Rider University at 2:30 p.m. at Kamine Stadium. They are then heading back down south this coming weekend, traveling to Davidson for a three-game series.
