Leopards Even Series at Towson

Strong pitching and Minghini's three-run home run powered Lafayette to victory

TOWSON, Md. – Lafayette baseball defeated Towson in game two of the four-game series, 6-2, on Saturday afternoon to even the series heading into Sunday's doubleheader.

The Leopards were led by junior Ethan Stern who went 3-for-4 from the plate and sophomore Dylan Minghini who hit a three-run home run to give the Leopards the lead in the top of the seventh.

Junior Colin Hartey and freshman Jack Amendola also had a solid afternoon at the plate going 2-for-5 and 2-for-4, respectively.

Starting pitcher senior Mark Anderson, in his first start of the season, went five innings earning the win.

Freshman Jacob Ciccone came in to pitch four innings of relief, striking out a career-high nine batters and earning his second save of the season.

Towson (4-8) got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning after back-to-back singles put runners on first and second with no outs and a few batters later, an infield ground out allowed a runner to cross the plate to put the Tigers up by one. They added one more in the inning to make it 2-0 heading into the third.

Lafayette (4-8) cut Towson's lead in half in the top of the fifth after Amendola singled to center field to bring home senior Trey Durrah, who found himself on second after walking to start off the inning and then advancing to second after freshman Pete Ciuffreda was hit by a pitch.

The Leopards added two more in the sixth after Stern found himself on first on a throwing error and senior Mark Glover singled to advance Stern to third, setting up runners in scoring position for freshman Seif Ingram. Ingram then singled to left center, scoring both Glover and Stern, to give the Leopards a one run lead.

Lafayette added three more in the seventh after Minghini hit a home run with Stern and Hartey both on base to push the lead out to four. Minghini's home run was his fourth of the season and second of the series.

After taking over on the mound for Anderson in the sixth, Ciccone shut down the Tigers in the eighth and ninth to close out the game and give the Leopards their fourth win of the season.

Up next for the Maroon and White is a doubleheader on Sunday with game one scheduled for 11 a.m. and game two to follow at 2 p.m.
