PHILADELPHIA (www.lafayette.edu) - Four of the top six singles' players pulled out wins as the Lafayette women's tennis team defeated St. Joseph's 4-3 in Philadelphia on Monday.
The Leopards improve to 3-1 with the win as the Hawks fall to 1-3 on the season.
Sophomore Monika Serrano (Caracas, Venezuela/Wallenpaupak) and co-captain Ali Kelley (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) competed at the top two singles' spots and downed their opponents 6-2, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-0.
Sophomore Jessica Abel (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) took home a win at No. 4 singles by defeating the Hawk's Jill Simodesjka 6-2, 6-2.
Junior Katie Gibbons (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) defeated Michelle Savage at No. 6 singles 6-2, 6-0 to round out the top six for Lafayette.
The Leopard team of Serrano/Kelley defeated St. Joseph's Jance Hoy/Pilar Gladzik 8-3 for the lone doubles victory.
Lafayette (3-1) travels to Lancaster, Pa. to take on Franklin & Marshall on Tuesday at 3:30.
