Women's Tennis Competes at Patriot League Tournament

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Leopard women's tennis team traveled to Lehigh to compete in the Patriot League Tournament this weekend. The flighted tournament saw three Lafayette players advance to the semifinal round and fare well in the consolation matches.

At No. 2 singles, sophomore co-captain Ali Kelley (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) defeated Bucknell's Ashley Diers 6-4, 6-1 to advance to the semifinal round. Kelley's run ended at the hands of the eventual champion, Kristina Georgieva from American in a straight set match, 6-0, 6-2.

Monika Serrano (Caracas, Venezuela/Wallenpaupak) competed at No. 1 singles but fell in the first round to Colgate's Marissa Alikpapa 6-0, 6-2. Sophomores Lisa Sayed (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Huron) and Jessica Abel (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) also dropped their first round matches in straight sets by scores of 6-0, 6-2 and 6-4, 6-2. Abel went on to compete in the back half of the draw and earned a win over Bucknell's Kristin Inglis 6-1, 6-3.

Sophomore Susan King (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) put up a fight at No. 5 singles before falling to Lehigh's Andrea Scott 7-6 (3), 6-1.

At No. 6 singles, junior Katie Gibbons (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) lost to Army's Jaclyn Ott 6-3, 6-3 but went on to beat Bucknell's Kristen Pugno 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 in a consolation match.

In doubles action the Lafayette No. 2 team of Abel/Gibbons defeated a team from Colgate 8-4 to advance to the semi's where they dropped the match to the eventual runners-up from Army, 8-1.
