Men's Tennis Drops St. Peter's

Oct. 4, 2001

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Leopard men's tennis team looked to avenge a hard loss from last season as they took on St. Peter's today at Sullivan Courts. Lafayette came away with a 7-0 win over the Peacocks and improves to 4-0 on the season.

Three of the top six single's matches went the distance but Lafayette's preseason work paid off as they held on for the shutout.

No. 1 singles player Matt Coin (Wenonah, N.J./Gateway) lost the first set 6-2 but came back to win the next two sets 6-1, 6-4. Junior co-captain H'Cone Thompson (Washington, D.C./DeMatha) put away his opponent in straight sets 6-4, 6-1.

Junior Ryan Collins (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) also won in straight sets, downing St. Peter's Slobodon Djukic 7-5, 6-1. Dan Seward (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) got a win at No. 3 singles by downing his challenger 6-4, 7-6 (4).

The Leopard's No. 5 and 6 singles matches had to be earned as Mike Durette (Avon, Conn./Suffield Academy) and Devin Murphy (Ruxton, Md./Boys Latin School) edged out their Peacock opponents 10-4 and 10-6 in the deciding third set tiebreakers.

Lafayette (4-0) looks to improve on its undefeated season as they travel to Coppin State on Wednesday for a 2:00 match.
