HAMILTON, N.Y. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette men's and women's cross country teams opened their seasons on Saturday at the Harry Lang Invitational at Colgate University. The women's team grabbed a third-place finish, just ahead of the men's fourth-place effort.
On the women's side senior Laura Nann (Bernardsville, N.J./Bernards) stood out for the Leopards, finishing in third place in a time of 7:56. Senior Erin Wyble (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) and freshman Mary Gillis (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall) also collected top 10 finishes. Wyble took eighth in a time of 25:39, finishing just ahead of Gillis who ended in 25:57.
Sophomore Caitlyn Herman (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury) finished 21st (27:32) followed by freshman Kelly Foran (Shamong, N.J./Bishop Eustace) in 26th (28:24) to round out the Leopards scoring five.
The Lafayette men were led by Ken Poli's (Darien, Conn./Darien) fifth-place finish. Poli cleared the 7,800-meter course in 27:03.
The other four of the Leopards' top five finishers were underclassmen. Freshman Matt Taverna (Whitesboro, N.Y./Whitesboro) placed 13th in 28:08 followed by sophomore Carlos Garcia (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) in 18th (28:23).
Freshmen Matt Puglisi (West Hempstead, N.Y./Chaminade) and Colin McDonough (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) placed 27th and 29th, respectively. Puglisi ran through the course in 28:57 and McDonough in 29:11.
The Leopards return to action at the Lehigh Valley Cross Country Championships at Lehigh on Friday, Sept. 7.
