Women's Tennis Defeats Monmouth in Season Opener

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Head women's tennis coach Barbara Young led a youthful team to their first win of the season in a 7-0 shutout over non-conference opponent Monmouth today in West Long Branch, N.J.

Consisting of six sophomores and a junior, the Leopards gave up just one set in the victory over the Hawks to put Lafayette at 1-0 for the season.

Monika Serrano (Caracas, Venezuela/ Wallenpaupak) and captain Ali Kelley (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) led the Leopards in the No. 1 and 2 positions and downed their opponents 6-3, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-3, respectively. The duo also teamed up in No. 1 doubles to earn an 8-3 win.

Lisa Sayed (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Huron) and Jessica Abel (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) competed in the No. 3 and 4 spots, defeating their Hawk counterparts by scores of 6-2, 6-4 and 6-4, 6-2.

Susan King (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) and Katie Gibbons (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) rounded out the singles positions at No. 5 and 6. King and Gibbons defeated their Monmouth opponents with scores of 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 and 6-1, 7-6 (3), respectively.

Lafayette opens the season at 1-0 while Monmouth falls to 0-1. The Leopards return to action versus La Salle on Sept. 20 at 3:30 in Philadelphia.
