PHILADELPHIA (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette held on for a 4-2 win over St. Joseph's in men's tennis action in Philadelphia on Thursday. The Leopards had to rely on results from their singles matches versus the Hawks as the doubles action was called for darkness.
The Leopards swept the top three singles spots as freshman Matt Coin (Wenonah, N.J./Gateway), junior H'Cone Thompson (Washington, D.C./DeMatha) and junior Ryan Collins (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) each picked up wins. Coin defeated St. Joseph's's Shawn Farrokh, 7-5, 6-1 at No.1 singles while Thompson downed Francisco Velazquez in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 2 spot. At No. 3 singles, Collins battled with St. Joseph's Van Homer Pangilinan for a three set win, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (2).
Freshman John Zazzu (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) picked up a win at No. 4 singles, beating the Hawks' Robert Cappelli in straight sets, 7-6 (5), 6-4. Sophomores Devin Murphy (Ruxton, Md./Boys Latin School) and Brian Schubert (Richmond, Va./Mills E. Godwin) fell at No.4 and 6 singles in straight sets.
Lafayette (9-2, 1-1) returns to home to host Rider on April 1 at 3 p.m.
