EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette women's tennis team opened its home spring season with a 6-1 win over the Broncs of Rider University on Monday at Sullivan Courts.
At No. 1 singles, junior Lily Fardshisheh (Potomac, Md./Holton Arms) defeated Rider's Kristen Zigo in straight sets after winning the first set in a tiebreaker (7-6 (7), 6-1). Lafayette's Monika Serrano (Caracas, Venezuela/Wallenpaupak) played at the No. 2 spot, defeating Meredith Dossin, 6-3, 6-0.
Leopard junior Shannon Rowe (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) won the No. 3 singles versus Stephanie Petrasko 6-1, 6-0 while sophomore Ali Kelley (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) was forced to retire at the No. 4 spot to give Rider its lone win of the match.
Sophomores Jessica Abel (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and Susan King (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) each picked up wins at No 5 and 6 singles. Abel won 6-1, 6-3 over Brandi Plummer while King blanked Beth Angove 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles action, Lafayette's Fardishisheh/Rowe teamed up at No. 1 doubles for an 8-1 win over Zigo/Angove while Serrano/Kelley won at the No. 2 spot over the Broncs' Dossin/Smith. Lafayette's sophomore duo of Abel/Lisa Sayed (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Huron) picked up a win at No. 3 singles over Plummer/Alison Jones, 8-2.
Lafayette (9-3, 0-1) returns to action tomorrow at St. Peter's at 3 p.m.
