EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette men's tennis team dropped just one set as it cruised to a 7-0 win over Loyola on Wednesday at Sullivan Courts. The Leopards improved to 12-4 overall while the Greyhounds dropped to 5-9.
Lafayette freshman Matt Coin (Wenonah, N.J./Gateway) allowed Loyola's John McConnell just two games with a win at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1. Junior co-captain H'Cone Thompson (Washington, D.C./DeMatha) also prevailed in straight sets, defeating the Greyhounds' John Glowacki, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.
Junior Ryan Collins (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) defeated Loyola's Brian Johnson in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Sophomore Devin Murphy (Ruxton, Md./Boys Latin School) got off to a rough start, dropping the first set 6-4 to Nick Bowers. Murphy rebounded to win the second set, 6-4, before going on to win a third set tiebreaker, 7-0 for the win at No. 4 singles.
At No. 5 singles, freshman John Zazzu (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) handed Loyola's Dan Schiemel a straight set loss with a 6-3, 6-4 win. Senior Mike Levey (Pine Brook, N.J./Montville) rounded out the singles sweep with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Loyola's Jonathan Falcichio.
Lafayette's doubles team of Coin/Thompson won at the No. 1 spot, 8-2 while Collins/Murphy got a win at the No. 2 spot (8-3). Zazzu/Alex Karapetian (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame) teamed up for the first time this year for an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles.
The Leopards (12-4, 1-2) returns to action on Thursday when they travel to Lewisburg, Pa., to take on league foe Bucknell at 3 p.m.
