EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette women's tennis team needed every point to get past Loyola, 4-3, in non-conference action on Wednesday at Sullivan Courts. With the match tied 3-3, No. 4 singles player Ali Kelley (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) won a third-set tiebreaker, 9-7, which lifted the Leopards to the 4-3 win over the Greyhounds.
Lafayette (11-3) began the match with a sweep in doubles led by junior co-captains Shannon Rowe (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) and Lily Fardshisheh (Potomac, Md./Holten Arms), who won, 8-3, at the No. 1 spot. Sophomores Monika Serrano (Caracas, Venezuela/Wallenpaupak) and Kelley took the No. 2 spot, 8-3, while sophomores Jessica Abel (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and Lisa Sayed (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Huron) won, 8-4, at the No. 3 spot.
Lafayette's Fardshisheh competed at No. 1 singles, defeating Loyola's Nancy Turnblacer, 6-2, 7-5. Loyola's Carolyn Pilkington handed Lafayette's Serrano a defeat at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-4.
The Leopards won No. 3 singles with hard-fought three-set match from Rowe, who defeated Kaitlin Russo 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-3. Kelley's match at No. 4 singles gave the Leopards the edge with her three-set marathon match, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (9).
Loyola's Colleen Ruane and Alison Popp defeated Lafayette's Abel and Sayed at Nos. 5 and 6 singles.
Lafayette improved to 11-3 and will travel to Lewisburg, Pa. to take on league foe Bucknell on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
