HAMILTON, N.Y. (www.lafayette.edu) - Three first-place finishes by freshman Elizabeth Helwig (Basking Ridge, N.J./Madison) and a late-meet surge were not enough as Lafayette's women's swimming team fell to Colgate, 164-130, on Thursday.

Helwig claimed the 50 freestyle (25.06), 100 freestyle (54.45) and 100 butterfly (59.65). Freshman Michelle Oswald (Timonium, Md./Carver Center) took a pair of first places, claiming the 100 backstroke (1:02.96) and 400 IM (4:52.07).

The Leopards had their best showing in the 400 IM, as Carrie Abildgaard (North Haven, Conn./North Haven), Daniele Menard (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) and Lindsay McCarthy (Peabody, Mass./Beverly) finished second through fourth, respectively.

Lafayette's other top finishes were in the 200 butterfly, where freshman Sara Berberich (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) claimed first in 2:15.44, and the 200 freestyle relay, where Tory Littlefield (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury), Lori Anderson (Haworth, N.J./North Valley-Demarest), Erin Malone (Oreland, Pa./Springfield Township) and Erin Rosensteel (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) took first in 1:44.93.

Littlefield and Abildgaard took second and third, respectively, in the 200 butterfly, joining Berberich to give the Leopards a 1-2-3 finish.

Lafayette returns to action on Jan. 24, hosting Georgetown at 2 p.m.
