JERSEY CITY, N.J. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette opened its spring women's tennis slate with a 7-0 win over St. Peter's on Friday afternoon. The Leopards finished their fall schedule with a 9-0 record.
Lisa Fung-Kee-Fung and Ansley Scudder survived 10-point tiebreakers in the third set of their matches at first and fourth singles, respectively, to preserve the shutout for the Leopards. Fung-Kee-Fung dropped her first set to Angela Wiggs in a tiebreaker before winning the second set 6-3, and went on for a 10-3 victory in the extra session. Scudder took her first set from Meredith Earley but lost the second in the tiebreaker. She came back to post a 10-4 decision in the abbreviated third set.
Fung-Kee-Fung and Clarke were 8-6 winners at first doubles, while Julia Strang and Danielle Bailey won 9-7 at the second slot. Scudder and Meghan Fitzgerald had an easier time at third doubles with an 8-0 victory.
Strang won 6-2, 6-4 over Vanessa Pangikas at No. 2 singles. Clarke (No. 3) and Bailey (No. 6) dropped one game each in winning their matches, and Fitzgerald blanked her opponent at fifth singles.
The women will take the court next on Saturday, Feb. 25 at Robert Morris.
