EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette and Colgate went down to the wire in Patriot League women's tennis action on Friday night at the Northwood Racquet Club, with the Raiders claiming the doubles point and a 4-3 win when the final match left the court.
The squads split singles action 3-3, which sent the doubles pairings on to determine the outcome. Jackie Couture and Alex Seaton picked up an 8-2 win over Chez Saricas and Julia Strang at No. 1 for Colgate, while Lisa Fung-Kee-Fung and Lauren Clarke won 8-3 at No. 2 for Lafayette. In the final match of the night, Cameron Thaney and Kate Serrurier of Colgate outlasted Stephanie Rosman and Danielle Bailey for an 8-6 win.
The loss ends Lafayette's season at 18-4, a new record for victories for the program. The Leopards will not travel to Army to resume play in a match that was postponed Thursday afternoon in Easton, as the Black Knights have secured the No. 1 seed in the Patriot League Tournament and Lafayette has been mathematically eliminated from postseason contention.
In singles action, Fung-Kee-Fung, Ansley Succder and Sarah Sykes won for the Leopards. At No. 3, Fung-Kee-Fung claimed the first set in a tiebreaker before her opponent retired due to injury. Scudder (No. 5) and Sykes (No. 6) both won in straight sets to earn the split.
Strang dropped a heartbreaking 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5) decision to Seaton at second singles. Couture won 6-1, 6-4 over Saricas at No. 1 and Fenn downed Clarke 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 for Colgate.
