Leopards Fold To Colgate In Patriot League Tournament Quarterfinals

April 21, 2007

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Lafayette men's tennis team was unable to stop a six-match Colgate winning streak in the quarterfinal round of the Patriot League Tournament held at the Navy Tennis Courts on a sunny afternoon in Annapolis.

It was a day of shutouts as the sixth-seeded Leopards fell in a 4-0 battle against the third-seeded Raiders in the final match of opening day. No. 4 Bucknell shutout No. 5 Lehigh in the opener, while No. 2 Army also blanked No. 7 Holy Cross in the Saturday's second match. The teams can earn three points in singles action, while the doubles matches remain the usual one point.

Colgate won both the first and third doubles flights, leaving the Leopards' second doubles team of junior Brett Kraft and sophomore Lee Kojanis to finish their match behind 6-5.

The first three singles matches to be completed led to the Raiders' win. Chris Innes topped junior Paul Guarino (6-4, 6-4) on the top court, while Kraft fell 6-1, 6-2 to Marshall Wheeler in the third spot. Playing in the sixth slot, freshman Matt McGranaghan dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Michael Yassky, which clinched the match for Colgate.

The Leopards fell 5-2 at home against Colgate in the regular-season contest on April 10.

Lafayette wraps-up the 2007 season when the team hosts Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday, May 2 at Sullivan Courts.
