EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette men's tennis team topped Lehigh 5-2 on Thursday afternoon at Sullivan Courts. The Leopards claimed the fifth seed in the Patriot League Tournament with the victory, snapping a losing streak to the Mountain Hawks that began in 2005. The team now stands at 2-4 in the conference with an overall mark of 12-7.
Senior Brett Kraft and junior Lee Kojanis battled for a 9-7 victory in second doubles. The match was the final decided of the doubles portion after Lafayette and Lehigh (6-13, 1-5) split at No. 1 and No. 3.
Sophomore Matt McGranaghan and freshman Justin Haar dropped an 8-1 decision in first doubles. At third doubles, sophomores Eric Wiley and James Murphy won 8-1 over Lehigh's John Bolcar and Brent Herbert.
Lafayette won four of six singles matches en route to the victory, losing second and fourth singles. Wiley earned the victory at No. 1 singles in the only match that took more than two sets to decide. He won the 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (12-10) decision over the Mountain Hawks' John Nespoli.
At third singles, Kraft won against Arnaldo Pacheco, 6-3, 6-1. Haar won at No. 5 by a 7-5, 6-3 margin over Chris Collins. In the final singles spot, Murphy earned the win in straight sets of 6-4, 6-1.
The Leopards will enter the Patriot League Tournament on April 25-27 as the No. 5 seed. The championships take place at Hamilton, N.Y.
