Villanova Sweeps Sunday Tennis in Easton

April 17, 2016

EASTON, Pa. – Villanova came away with a pair of victories over the Lafayette men's and women's tennis teams on Saturday at Sullivan Courts. The women dropped a 6-1 decision, while the men fell, 7-0.

The women celebrated senior day prior to the match honoring Caroline Nixon, Catherine Senopoulos and Ally Simels for their contributions to the program. Nixon put forth an inspired effort in the lone singles win, a double-tiebreak victory by a score of 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (8-6).

Simels and Rocine Moschella pulled off a doubles victory in the second slot by a 6-2 score, but the other six matches, including five on singles courts, went Villanova's way in the 6-1 loss.

On the men's side, the doubles teams hung tough, dropping three matches by a combined 18-11 score. Chris Matturri and Mason Keel took each of their singles matches into third sets, but both fell by 10-4 margins in the deciders to push the final to 7-0.

"Although we didn't pull out a win, everyone played exceptionally well today. Caroline was stellar with two tiebreaker wins in singles," head coach Ralph Van Ormer said. "The men played their best doubles of the year. We continue to be in every match and we're taking important steps in a rebuilding year. There's lots of freshmen talent here that is getting the chance to play in the starting lineup and earn valuable experience."

The women will wrap up their regular season with a home match against Moravian on Tuesday before Patriot League Tournament play begins on April 21. The men host Lehigh on Monday afternoon in their final league match before their tournament begins on April 28.
