EMMITSBURG, Md. - The Lafayette men's and women's tennis teams traveled to Mount St. Mary's on Friday evening with the women coming out on top, 5-2, and the men dropping a 7-0 decision.
In the women's match, the Leopards dropped the doubles point with Caroline Nixon and Rocine Moschella picking up the lone 6-4 victory in the top doubles flight. However, five singles victories propelled the team to victory as all but Nixon's match were down to the wire.
"This was a great match from the girls," interim head coach Ralph Van Ormer said. "Everyone played smart tennis after a long rain delay. We had big wins from Haley Matthes and Rocine Moschella in the six and three spots. Catherine Senopoulos played to another tiebreaker, but this time came out on top, while Caroline Nixon was dominant in the top slot."
Nixon won by a 6-1, 6-3 margin, while Senopoulos defeated her opponent by a 6-4, 4-6, 10-6 score. The win moves the women to 3-7 on the year overall.
The men didn't have as much success against the Mount, falling by a 7-0 score. Chris Matturri fought to push his match to a tiebreaker after dropping the first set, but came out on the low side of a 10-7 score in the deciding game.
Ethan Binder and Matthew DeBenedetto recorded the lone win for the Leopards in exhibition on the doubles side, taking down their opponent by a 6-1 score. The loss drops the men to 2-9 on the year overall.
Both sides will travel to Navy for their next contests tomorrow afternoon. The women will begin at 10 a.m., while the men will follow at 2 p.m. Below are the full results from Friday's matches.
