VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Lafayette field hockey team was clicking offensively on Monday evening on the road as the Leopards found the back of the cage plenty in a 5-2 victory over Villanova.
The Leopards, coming off a four-goal game against No. 24 Boston U. over the weekend, scored five more on Monday as the offense has begun to roll heading into the heart of the Patriot League schedule. The victory moves the Maroon and White to 3-8 overall on the year, while Villanova drops to 4-7.
Four of the Leopards' five goals came off corners as senior co-captains
Theresa Delahanty and
Lisa van der Geest worked the set plays to perfection. Delahanty slipped in after inserting and deflected in a pair of tallies, while van der Geest assisted on three of the corner scores.
Lafayette built a big lead through a dominant opening half of hockey, jumping out to a 3-0 advantage just before halftime. Villanova responded immediately out of the break, scoring a pair less than a minute apart in the 39
th minute to trim the edge to one at 3-2.
From there, though, the Leopards stemmed the tide, adding two more markers over the next 13 minutes to jump the edge back up to three, 5-2, with 18:05 to play. The Wildcats pulled their goalie with just over four minutes remaining, but Lafayette's defense stood tall and worked the game out to the final buzzer for its third victory of 2018.
Between the pipes, junior
Sarah Park was solid, picking up the win with three saves. Villanova's Erika Miller finished with three saves and five goals allowed in defeat.
Villanova finished the game with a 19-12 edge in shots, while both teams earned six penalty corners. Aside from Delahanty's pair, the other Leopard goals were scored by sophomore
Grace Angelella, senior
Liza Welch and freshman
Molly McAndrew.
The Leopards are poised to return to Patriot League play on Saturday, traveling to Hamilton, N.Y. for a meeting with Colgate at 12 p.m.
