Defensive Battle Snaps Field Hockey Win Streak

Leopards fall by a 2-0 score at Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Lafayette field hockey's four-game winning streak came to an end on Sunday afternoon in Providence, R.I. as the Leopards couldn't get on the board in a defensive battle, losing to Providence by a 2-0 score.

The game was the second in as many days for the Maroon and White, who defeated Holy Cross in a critical Patriot League matchup on Saturday morning, 3-2. The loss moves their overall record to 6-9 on the season, but the Leopards remain at 3-1 in Patriot League play, tied for the second spot in the league standings.

It was an evenly played contest through the first 15 minutes before the Friars took advantage after the Leopards failed to score on their opening penalty corner. Providence came down the field on the counter and was able to work a play that beat Lafayette junior goalkeeper Sarah Park for the first score of the game.

The 1-0 scoreline held through the majority of the day as the Leopards narrowly missed their chances at an equalizer. With just over five minutes to play, a scramble in front led to the second Friars tally, giving the home side the insurance it needed to watch the clock run out on a 2-0 final.

Park made a pair of saves in her ninth defeat of the year, while the Leopards forced six saves from Providence net-minder Lydia Rice. Lafayette led in shots on the day, 8-6, and corners, 5-3.

The Leopards return to Rappolt Field for the final home contest of the 2018 season on Saturday, moving back to Patriot League play to host American for Senior Day at 12 p.m.
