PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Junior co-captain
Lisa van der Geest and freshman
Molly McAndrew were the right tandem at the right time on Friday evening in Philadelphia, Pa., connecting for the game-winning goal in overtime to send the Lafayette field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Drexel.
Working down the left side, McAndrew beat her defender twice as she entered the circle and flicked up a high cross toward a waiting van der Geest, centrally placed in front of goal. Van der Geest lifted her stick and deflected the ball over the top of Drexel goalie Erin Gilchrist for the game-winner.
The victory is the second of the overtime variety in the last three games for the Maroon and White and moves the Leopards to 2-6 on the season overall. Lafayette defeated Lehigh in an extra session a week ago, when McAndrew provided an individual effort for the golden goal.
It was a highly-contested affair as both sides poured on the offensive chances throughout the game. The two sides were forced into a combined 11 saves on the night as Lafayette's
Sarah Park made three for her second win of her junior campaign.
Drexel opened the scoring with 13:16 to go in the first half as a dribbler shot from the left fooled Park and trickled over the goal line for the early lead. Lafayette responded, though, with less than three minutes to go before the break as sophomore
Audrey Sawers found herself in the right position to make a play.
Van der Geest started the play with a send into the box from just across midfield, as Sawers snuck behind the defense, corralled the ball and deked around the goalie before slotting it in the back of the cage to tie it at 1-1. Sawers was all over the field for Lafayette in this one, creating three shots with two of them on target.
Lafayette led the way in shots by a 12-9 margin and out-cornered the Dragons, 5-4. Van der Geest led all players with four shots on the night, putting three on target with the other two aside from the goal coming as the anchor of the corner unit.
Lafayette has a quick turnaround and a tough opponent coming up in its next matchup, returning to Rappolt Field for its Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Game on Sunday, a meeting with No. 19 Liberty at 1 p.m.
