Field Hockey Can’t Hold On in Fight with Temple

Leopards led 2-1 midway through second half, but two late Temple goals proved costly

EASTON, Pa. – In the return from a two-game road trip to Rappolt Field for the Lafayette field hockey team on Friday night, the Leopards couldn't hold on to a second-half lead, falling by a 3-2 score to Temple.

It was a tightly contested affair throughout as the Leopards were able to get on the board on either side of the halftime break. Unfortunately, Temple converted in crunch time with two goals in the last 16 minutes to decide the outcome.

The loss leaves the Maroon and White still searching for their first win in 2018 at 0-4, while the Owls pick up their first victory of the season, moving to 1-4. Lafayette goalie Sarah Park made five saves in defeat and Temple's Chloe Johnson notched the win with six stops of her own.

Temple used a corner to open the scoring in the 12th minute as Taylor Alba and Dani Batze teamed up to feed Mia Sexton, who deflected a shot high and into the right side for the early 1-0 advantage. That looked to be the only goal of the opening frame until a flurry from the Leopards late.

With less than a second remaining on the clock, Lafayette was awarded a corner. From there, sophomore Audrey Sawers and senior Liza Welch connected with sophomore Grace Angelella, who also used the right side of the cage to send the game to the break tied at 1-1.

Lafayette came out in the second half and, in just 2:32, earned a penalty stroke deep in Temple territory. Sophomore Anna Steps made no mistake, placing a beauty of a shot into the top left corner to give the Leopards the 2-1 lead.

The home side held that advantage for just under 16 minutes before Lucy Reed found space on a counter and finished on the right side 1v1 past Park for the tying tally. Nine minutes later, a Temple corner produced the eventual game-winner as Alba and Kathryn Edgar set up Maris Stern for the score.

It was a well-played game for the Maroon and White that just didn't have the finishing touch to warrant a positive result. The Leopards led in shots, 18-10 and corners, 9-5.

Lafayette will look to rebound quickly in its next contest on Sunday, traveling to Quinnipiac for a matchup with Maine in Hamden, Conn. on Sunday at 12 p.m.
