William & Mary Spoils Field Hockey Senior Day in Overtime

Leopards fall by 3-2 score after leading 2-0 through three quarters

EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette field hockey team controlled the game for three quarters on Sunday afternoon against defending CAA champion William & Mary at Rappolt Field, but two fourth-quarter goals from the Tribe sent the game to overtime and the visitors found the winner to send the Leopards to a 3-2 defeat on Senior Day.

Prior to the contest, the Maroon and White recognized the four-year contributions of a six-member senior class, including Sam Di Maio, Cameron Costello, Jenn DeLongis, Lisa van der Geest, Caroline Turnbull and Sarah Park. This group will head to its second straight Patriot League Tournament later this season following a clinching win over Lehigh on Friday evening.

The Leopards showed off their improvement from a year ago once again, having fallen to the Tribe by a 4-1 score last September. Van der Geest and junior Anna Steps were the goal-scorers, both coming off corner opportunities, while Park was exceptional between the pipes with nine saves.

Van der Geest fired a strike into the right corner less than three minutes into the second half for the opening goal of the game after a first half that featured just six shots, five coming from the visiting side. Just over 10 minutes later, the Leopards doubled their lead when van der Geest found Steps for a deflection tally to make it 2-0 into the fourth.

The Tribe lit the board just over two minutes into the fourth and found the equalizer with just 2:56 remaining in the contest. The extra session lasted 2:16 before Cassidy Goodwin beat Park for the winner.

The visitors held an 18-3 advantage in shots on the day and out-cornered the Maroon and White, 7-5. The win moves the Tribe to 9-5 on the year overall, while Lafayette falls to 9-6.

Lafayette returns to Patriot League play in its next tilt, hosting Bucknell at Rappolt Field at 12 p.m.
