EASTON, Pa. -- The Lafayette men and women fought valiantly, but came up on the short end against Siena in their first matches of the spring season on Friday evening at the Northwood Racquet Club indoor courts.
The Saints, playing in their sixth matches of the new year, exhibited just a little less rust in posting 4-3 and 4-0 wins over the Lafayette women's and men's squads, respectively.
"I thought everybody played well and they were good matches," said head coach
Ralph Van Ormer. "Obviously we didn't come out on the winning side but did well for the first time out this season."
MEN
Siena squeaked out the doubles point with both No. 1 and No. 2 tandems going to the wire. Tomos del Olmo and Guillermo Torres edged the Leopards'
William Barry and
Brandt Baldwin 7-5 at No. 1 and the No. 2 match on the adjoining court was even closer as
John Yurconic and
Daniel Kramer fell 7-6 (9-7) to Siena's Matt Bellino and Sagar Bains.
Barry was involved in another close match competing at No. 1 singles with a 7-5, 3-6 (10-8) setback to Bains. At No. 2, Yurconic lost 6-3, 6-2 to del Olmo and the Saints sealed the match with a 6-2, 6-1 win by Muhammad Sawani at No. 4 singles. A trio of matches involving Kramer (No. 3),
Ross Coleman (No. 5) and
Paul Caruso (No. 6) were halted when the match was decided.
"I thought the men competed very well," said Van Ormer. "Our No. 1 guy (Barry) went the distance and lost in a tiebreaker and we were winning the No. 3 (Kramer) spot before it went DNF. Both of the doubles were close - we are definitely improving and just have to get that experience and we will be in a lot of matches."

WOMEN
Despite earning singles points from
Cecelia Lesnick,
Samantha Snyder and
Katie Hill the host Leopards came up just short in their first match of the spring season against a Siena squad that entered the day with five competitive matches under their belt.
"If we had just taken that doubles point, we'd have won the match," said Van Ormer. "It was good competition and that will help us out in the long run."
After dropping a hard fought 7-5 setback at No. 1. doubles, Lesnick and Snyder rebounded with victories in the first two singles matches for Lafayette. At No. 1 singles, Lesnick roared back to take a 3-6, 7-6 (10-8) win over Kylie Mullaney. Snyder followed suit with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) victory at No. 2 singles. The Saints got the better of the middle of the lineup as Anessa Leyva posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over Lafayette freshman
Maureen McCormack at No. 3 and Natalie Weaver edged
Grace Conrad 6-2, 1-6 (10-7) at No. 4.
The teams split the final two singles matches with Siena taking No. 5 as Dilara Spicer defeated co-captain
Meredith Block 6-2, 6-3 and Lafayette's
Katie Hill emerging victorious at No. 6 by an 8-6 score over Ann Phillips.
The Lafayette women will try to bounce back on Saturday as they host St. Francis-Brooklyn at 2 p.m. on the Northwood Racquet Club indoor courts.
