SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Twenty student-athletes on the Lafayette Men's and Women's tennis squad got the fall portion of the schedule launched by participating in the Siena Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
Sophomores
Maureen McCormack and
William Barry captured the Women's "B" and Men's "A" flights, respectively, by cruising through their respective field. After dropping her first match on Friday, senior
Grace Conrad won three straight to win the back draw bracket in the Women's "B" flight as well.
McCormack went 4-0 in the two-day event, winning a pair of three-set matches before taking the final match 6-0, 6-0 over FDU's Tatiana Eftenoiu. Barry knocked off Hofstra's Alvaro Arce Lopez-Sanchez, the top seed in the bracket, 9-8 (3) in his first match and defeated Colgate Scott Bickel, a 2019 First Team All-Patriot League performer, in the final.
Other strong performances included
Alexa Cooke (2-1 in Women's "C" Flight) and
Samantha Snyder (2-1 in Women's "A" Flight). Also, McCormack teamed with freshman Alyssa Sarver to go 2-1 in the Women's Doubles "C" Flight where they lost in the final.
On the men's side, Freshmen
Nash Lovallo and Ryan Thompson each won twice in the Men's Flight "D" singles.
"(It was a) great weekend for the team," head coach
Ralph Van Ormer said. "Lot's of impressive wins by the new freshmen. Overall, an impressive team weekend."
The men's squad will take part in the Villanova Invitational next weekend and both teams will be in action on September 25 at Rider.
