LYNCHBURG, Va. – The upset wasn't to be for the Lafayette field hockey team on Sunday afternoon on the road, falling by a 5-0 score to No. 20 Liberty.

The game was the second in three days for the Maroon and White, dropping a 3-2 effort against Appalachian State on Friday evening. The Leopards move to 1-3 on the year, while Liberty remains unbeaten at 3-0.

The Maroon and White held off the home side through the opening quarter, but two scores in the second made it a 2-0 game into the halftime break. The Flames added two more within a minute of each other just out of halftime to open the game up at 4-0, and caged their fifth late in the third period for the 5-0 final.

Liberty's Daniella Rhodes tallied two scores, while Mallory Fortenbaugh, Alivia Klopp and Maddie Hosler each scored once. Offensively for Lafayette, freshman

Audrey Sawers registered a team-high four shots, but missed the target on all four.

Sarah Park gave a valiant effort between the pipes with a season-high nine saves in her 60 minutes of action. Liberty's Allison Schaefer made one save in her third win.

The Flames led in shots, 20-7, and shots on goal, 14-1. Lafayette earned four corners and allowed five to the opposing side.

Next up for the Leopards is a return to Rappolt Field on Friday for a meeting with Providence at 7 p.m.
