Field Hockey Claims 2024 Patriot League Championship

Leopards move past top-seeded American 2-1 in overtime

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Lea Good's overtime game-winning goal allowed Lafayette to upset top-seeded American, 2-1, to capture the 2024 Patriot League Championship  on Saturday afternoon at Jacobs Field.

The 2024 crown is the first for the program since 2012 as the Eagles and Leopards have met for the League title eight times, including four in the last six seasons.

The Leopards worked as a unit to fend off three American chances in the circle to keep the first period scoreless.

Junior goalkeeper Raffi Fragomeni halted American's offensive two-v-zero advance at 27:47, stopping a pair of shots.

Despite three consecutive penalty corner opportunities in the second quarter, Lafayette finished the first half tied 0-0 with the hosts.

American's Agustina Roffo broke the silence with a deflected goal at 50:44 to put the Eagles out front 1-0.

The Leopards went on to earn a penalty stroke with five minutes left in regulation, taken by Stella Malinowski. The successful shot by the sophomore forward, going 4-for-5 on the season, sent the contest into overtime with a 1-1 score.

In extra minutes, Good sent a penalty corner deflection of her own into the back of the net, assisted by Makenzie Switzer.

Lafayette posted four All-Tournament honorees in Switzer, Lena Thedrian and Fragomeni. Lineke Spaans was also credited with the Patriot League Field Hockey Championship MVP award.

American held the advantage in total shots (12-7), while the Maroon and White earned more penalty corners (7-3).

Fragomeni made seven total saves in the victory. Her Eagle counterpart, Bryn Underwood, made three.

The NCAA Tournament bracket will be revealed during the selection show on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 10 p.m. ET. Ten teams receive automatic qualification into the tournament via conference championships with the remaining eight teams selected at-large. A team must have an overall won-lost record of .500 or better and complete a minimum of 11 contests to be considered during the at-large selection process.

The tournament begins with two opening-round games on Wednesday, Nov. 13, followed by the first and second rounds on Nov. 15 and 17. The semifinals and national championship games scheduled for Nov. 22 and 24 will be played at Phyllis Ocker Field in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
