WASHINGTON, D.C. - No. 2 Lafayette field hockey took No. 4 seed Boston U. to the wire, 3-2, during Saturday afternoon's Patriot League Tournament final at Jacobs Recreational Complex.
The Terriers posted the first goal of the game at 17:43 in the second period after a pair of penalty corners. Caroline O'Brien netted the tally, assisted by Megan Wetzel and Molly Driscoll.
Lafayette equalized over 23 minutes later using a low corner tip by
Maddie Evans (40:49). The junior forward was assisted by freshman Rosalie Van Gool's strike.
Boston U. received a penalty stroke at 43:13, which was halted by Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year,
Raffi Fragomeni, to keep a 1-1 tie going into the final quarter.
The Terriers' O'Brien scored on a fast break near the 46-minute mark, creating a 2-1 advantage for the lower seed.
With five minutes left in regulation,
Lena Thedrian created an opportunity for Lafayette, bringing the ball up the left side of the field. Possession was passed to
Kiley Gallagher who sent a quick stick over to
Stella Malinowski. The Vancouver, B.C. native faked right and shot left for Lafayette's second goal of the game at 55:49, tied 2-2.
Boston's O'Brien tallied her third goal of the day, the first ever hat trick in a Patriot League championship game, at 57:37 to secure the 3-2 decision and conference crown for the first time since 2018.
The 2025 Patriot League All-Tournament Team selections included
Makenzie Switzer,
Katie Gibb and Thedrian.
The Terriers held the advantage in total shots (12-9) as the Leopards earned more penalty corners (7-4).
Lafayette's Fragomeni, the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year, made four saves while facing seven shots on goal. Her counterpart, Sophie Ortyl, made two saves on four shots on goal.
The Leopards conclude the 2025 season with a 12-7 (5-1 PL) record.
