EASTON, Pa.- Lafayette field hockey led No. 5 Syracuse 2-1 at halftime, before falling in a 5-2 final on Sunday afternoon at Rappolt Field.
Josephine van Wijk frightened the Orange, who had not yet trailed to any opponent this season, with a goal just two minutes into the first quarter.
Syracuse's Bo Van Kempen evened the match 1-1 at 7:09, assisted by Pati Strunk on a penalty corner.
The Leopards crafted a corner of their own at 24:53 in the second period.
Rosalie van Gool swept a shot into the Orange goalkeeper, which ricocheted into the net to give Lafayette the upper hand, 2-1, at halftime.
Katie Gibb (inserter) and
Lea Good (stick-stop) were credited with the two assists.
Syracuse went on to tally four unanswered goals in the remaining two periods for a 5-2 victory, improving to 6-0 on the season. Van Kempen secured a penalty stroke in both of the quarters (Q3 33:38, Q4 49:00). Her teammate, Ally Snyder, posted the remaining Orange scores in regular action at 36:29 and 52:04 in the third and fourth period, respectively.
Syracuse held the advantage in total shots (21-7). The Leopards created four penalty corners to the two Orange opportunities.
Senior goalkeeper
Raffi Fragomeni made eight saves as Lafayette dropped to 3-3 overall. Her Syracuse counterparts, Jessie Eiselin (two saves) and Tane King (one save), each spent 30 minutes in the cage.
