UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- No. 19 Lafayette field hockey took Penn State to extra minutes before falling 3-2 on Sunday afternoon.
The Nittany Lions halted the Leopards' eight-game win streak that dated back to Sept. 4 against Temple.
Both squads fought valiantly through three scoreless quarters, before Lafayette secured the first goal of the game at 51:01.
Emma Maher earned the tally, assisted by
Maddie Evans.
Penn State found an equalizer at 52:31 through Olivia Marthins for a 1-1 tie with less than eight minutes to play in regulation.
Natalie Freeman put the hosts ahead 2-1, assisted by Marthins (53:07).
Lafayette subbed out its goalkeeper in favor of an extra field player in the final four minutes of the fourth period. It proved successful as
Lena Thedrian and
Katie Gibb teamed up to send the game into overtime, tied 2-2, with a goal at 57:52.
The host's Ella Gaitan recorded the game-winning goal during the second penalty corner of the extra period.
Penn State held the advantage in total shots (7-6). Both programs had three penalty corner opportunities.
Lafayette's junior goalkeeper
Addison Kahn made two saves, which was matched by her Nittany Lion counterpart, Aby Deverka.
Next up, the Leopards travel to Bucknell on Friday for a 6 p.m. push back.
