EASTON, PA - Lafayette College's Maroon Club Athletic Hall of
Fame will expand to 86 members this Friday, November 19, 2000,
when three former stand-out student-athletes and one former
coaching great are inducted at a ceremony in the College's Marquis
Hall.
Dr. Tom Davis, Lafayette's men's basketball coach from 1971 to
1977, will join Frank Baur '90, Al Caesar '58 and Jen Smith '89 as the
Hall of Fame's class of 1999.
In addition to the induction ceremonies, two current Lafayette
student-athletes -- Bob Osipower '00 of the baseball team and Kellee
Salber '00 of the field hockey and women's lacrosse teams -- are
being honored with the 1999-2000 Maroon Club Scholar-Athlete
Awards. In honor of this achievement, both Osipower and Salber will
receive plaques and $1,000 will be shared between their academic
major and their varsity team.
Lafayette's career passing leader with 8,399 yards, Frank Baur '90
owns or shares 15 school passing records. He was at the helm of the
1988 squad which won the Colonial League title, and the following
year was elected team captain. His 400 yards passing against Army
in 1987 still stands as the school record, and is just one of his 13
games in which he passed for over 225 yards. Honored as a
First-Team All-American in 1988 by both the Associated Press and
Football Gazette, Baur owns six school total offense records. He was
the first Leopard to ever participate in the Hula Bowl for college
all-stars.
As an athlete active in both football and baseball, Al Caesar '58
earned the Class of 1913 trophy as the school's outstanding
student-athlete. In 1957, Caesar led the nation in home runs, helping
the Leopard squad to the College World Series. A versatile athlete, as
well as student, Caesar was a starting halfback on the football team
as well as being a member of the Maroon Key Society, the Knights of
the Roundtable and the Student-Athletic Council.
A highly respected coach on the national scene, Dr. Tom Davis
recently resigned as the head coach of the Iowa University men's
basketball team. From 1971 to 1977, Davis led his Leopards' squads
to a 116-44 (.725) record, which included trips to the NIT in 1971-72
and 1974-75, including the school's only win in the tournament in
1972. He sports the school's fourth winningest record and the second
highest winning percentage. Davis' career also had stops at Boston
College and Stanford. Altogether, Davis has a career record of
426-222 (.657) in 22 years.
Both a lacrosse and field hockey standout at Lafayette, Jen Smith
'89 holds the school record in lacrosse for most goals scored with
220, tallied from 1986-89. She is third in career assists with 71, and
second in total points with 291. Smith also had a productive field
hockey career, as she scored 17 goals and 11 assists for 45 points in
her four-year career. In her senior season, Smith was named
All-American in lacrosse.
Bob Osipower '00, the starting third baseman for the Leopard
baseball team, carries a 3.65 overall GPA, while earning a 3.82 GPA
within his Mechanical Engineering major. A Dean's list member for
the last five semesters, Bob won the Patriot League Scholar Athlete
Award for Baseball, awarded to only one player in the league. The
senior has been bestowed such athletic honors as Patriot League
First-Team in 1998 and 1999, as well as being a Louisville Slugger
Freshman All-American in 1997. He has also been named an All-Star
in the Atlantic Coast Baseball League, where he plays during the
summer.
Kellee Salber '00 is a standout in both lacrosse and field hockey,
being named to the Patriot League First Team in both sports for the
last two seasons. The biology major, who carries a 3.05 GPA, is a
key member of this year's Patriot League Champion field hockey
team, leading the league in scoring with 20 goals and four assists for
44 points. Salber is tied for second all-time with Jen Durkin '97 in
Lafayette field hockey scoring. In her three years on the women's
lacrosse team, she has accumulated 84 goals and 30 assists for 114
points.
