Harold Bellis is best known among Lafayette College
alumni and friends as having quarterbacked the
undefeated football team of 1937, which went 8-0 and
allowed just six points all year long. But he also should be
remembered as the key blocking back for several seasons in
head coach Hook Mylin's devastating ground attacks.

A native of Phillipsburg, NJ, Bellis is a 1934 graduate of Phillipsburg
High, and was a standout for the Stateliners' football and
baseball teams. From there, he attended Mercersburg Academy
for one year and was captain of both the football and baseball
teams. At Lafayette, he was also captain of the baseball team
and earned kudos for several seasons as an outstanding infielder.
He missed just one game in four years. After his collegiate career
and tour of duty in the Air Force during World War II, Bellis came
back to his hometown and embarked on a very successful
teaching and coaching career. By the time of his coaching
retirement in 1967, Bellis accomplished a 14-year football
record of 86-29-10 with two undefeated seasons (1960 and 1964).
