Harold Anson Bruce was head track coach and director of
physical training at Lafayette College from 1910-25, and during
that time Lafayette was recognized as one of the best teams in
the East. Two of his protégés were Olympians - sprinter Al
LeConey and distance runner Robert Crawford - who are fellow
members of the Hall of Fame.

For his part as director of physical training, Bruce is credited with developing many of the intramural programs that still exist today. He was a noted character
who dabbled in fund raising and management with more than his
share of success. His much heralded Winter Carnival of sports
events even included boxing and fencing. In the area of fund raising,
Bruce is said to have raised his own scholarship money for track
athletes he recruited to Lafayette. Widely respected in the coaching
field, Bruce was the prime organizer of the Middle Atlantic
Conference track association. Before retiring from coaching, Bruce
was track coach for a foreign Olympic Team and assistant to the
U.S. Olympic Team.
