Robert Crawford won seven individual Middle Atlantic
States Intercollegiate Association track championships and held
five school records at the time of his graduation. He also
unofficially held the cross country course record.
In addition to his achievements in a Lafayette uniform, Crawford was a
member of the United States Olympic team which competed at
the 1920 Games in Antwerp, Belgium. His specialty was the
10,000 meter cross country race, in which he placed 40th and
helped the Americans to a fourth place finish.
Against Johns Hopkins as a freshman, Crawford's mile time of
4:22 set a College and Southern Intercollegiate record. And later
that year he added the Conference mile title. From his sophomore
year on, Crawford never lost either the 880 or the mile in a dual
meet. And at the MASIAA Championships that year, he claimed
three victories, winning the 880 in 2:03, the mile in 4:37.4 and the
two mile in a record time of 10:11.4.
