An outstanding late bloomer, Jon Ellis `54
didn't start throwing discus until he was in
college, but in 1953 he was named a track and
field All-American.
His senior year in 1954, he
became the IC4A discus champion, placing him
atop all of the other collegiate competitors in the
region. In 1957, he went on to break the discus
world record with a toss of 191 feet, two and a
half feet further than the previous record.
