William Kovalczyk made an impressive
impact on Lafayette track and field. The 6'1", 165
pound athlete holds outdoor track records in the
400-meters (46.74) set in 1978, and turned in the
fastest leg in the mile-relay in Lafayette history.
Indoors Kovalczyk holds record in the 400-meter
(48.20), and pieces the sprint medley relay and the
mile relay record times. Originally recruited by
Lafayette as a wrestler, Kovalczyk earned All-
America honors by placing sixth in the NCAA
Indoor Track and Field Championships in Detroit,
MI, in his senior year thus becoming the school's first
track All-American. He served as team tri-captain his
senior year and competed at the National Invitational
and Olympic Invitational Indoor track meets. Born
March 10,1956, Kovalczyk graduated from Passiac
Valley Regional High School in 1974.
