Herb McCracken is one of the winningest coaches
(59-40-6) to ever head Lafayette Football teams. His 12
seasons at Lafayette included an undefeated (9-0) team
in 1926. McCracken came to campus after three years as
head coach at Allegheny College. He had been a
basketball and football star at the University of Pittsburgh.

In the latter sport, the famous Pop Warner had called him
"my greatest all-around athlete." In 1935 he left the
coaching profession to devote time to his business
interests. McCracken had helped found Scholastic
Magazine in 1922 and he was the publisher of Scholastic
Coach which he started in 1931. His association with
Lafayette continued as a member of the Board of Trustees
(1963-71) and, in 1968, he received an honorary degree
from Lafayette. He was the recipient of the Danny Hatch '04
award for his service to Lafayette athletics in 1971. In 1972
he received the National Football Foundation's
Distinguished American Award. Two years later he
became the third Lafayette coach to be inducted into the
NFF Collegiate Hall of Fame.
