Six Leopards up for Lafayette's top senior athlete
George McGaughey served Lafayette
College for 32 years as an assistant football
coach and director of intramurals, beginning
in 1937 when head football coach "Hook"
Mylin persuaded McGaughey to join him in
Easton. His tenure began with the Leopards
going 8-0 that season. "That was our best
defensive team," said McGaughey. "We only
allowed one touchdown to be scored on us
and that was on an intercepted pass that was
returned."

Three years later it was the offense
that led Lafayette to a 9-0 record. The Leopards
averaged 26 points and rushed for 2,758 yards
that season, a school record that still stands. In
1942, McGaughey joined the armed forces, but
renewed his association with the college again
in 1950 under "Clipper" Smith as varsity line
coach and head freshman coach. He bowed
out of coaching in 1964, after 19 seasons, but
continued as director of intramurals until his
retirement in 1977. A 1935 graduate of Bucknell,
this Vandergrift, PA native earned honorable
mention All-America honors as a senior and
helped the Bison to a 26-0 win over Miami in
the first Orange Bowl. In 1982, McGaughey was
inducted into Bucknell's Athletic Hall of Fame.
