Stuart Murray was a key player in the
Leopards' enormous success on the
basketball courts in the mid 1950's. During
his hoop career at Lafayette, Murray helped
lead his team to a sparkling three-year
record of 66 wins and 15 losses.
In addition,
Murray led the Leopards to post-season play
for the first time ever in each of his three
years. Lafayette participated in the NIT in
Murray's sophomore and junior seasons and
in the NCAA Regional Playoffs in his senior
campaign. In that 1956-57 season, Murray
averaged 22.1 points a game while shooting
49 percent from the floor and 83.5% from the
free throw line. In the `56-'57 season, the 6'0"
Murray set a new single-season point total
record of 597 (later surpassed) which eclipsed
the previous school standard by 124 points set
by his head coach, George Davis `51. Born in
Newark, NJ on October 10,1935, Murray grew
up in West Orange.
