When the late Edward E. "Hook" Mylin
came to Lafayette as head football coach is the
fall of 1937, he had already established
himself - both as a player and as a coach - and
as a man who loved a challenge. What he
accomplished in his first year as head coach of
the Leopards is probably, however, his greatest
single achievement.
Inheriting a team that had
posted a dismal 1-8 mark in 1936, Mylin directed
Lafayette to an undefeated season, cruising
through eight straight opponents with his
defense allowing just six points for the entire
year. The swift turnaround of Leopard football
fortunes earned Hook national Coach-of-the-
Year honors. Mylin posted a combined record of
36-24-1 as head coach at Lafayette. In addition to
his unbeaten team of 1937, Hook's 1940 Leopards
swept to a 9-0 mark, including a 19-0 drubbing of
a highly regarded Army.
