Mike Scott joined the Lafayette track and field staff in 2017 and has helped produce one of the most sustained periods of record-setting performances in the program's recent history. A veteran collegiate coach with nearly three decades of experience across NCAA Division I, II and III programs, Scott works with the Leopards' sprints, hurdles, jumps and combined events. He also coaches Lafayette's 4x100 and 4x400 relays and contributes to selected 4x800 and distance-medley relays.
Since arriving on College Hill, Scott has coached Lafayette school-record holders and record-setting relay performers in the sprints, hurdles, jumps, combined events and relays, while helping numerous athletes move into the program's all-time Top 10.
His Lafayette record-setting athletes include Timothy Payne, who broke a 40-year-old school record in the 110-meter hurdles; John Liedtka, who later succeeded Payne as Lafayette's 110-meter hurdles record holder; Tyler Hubeny, who established and improved the Leopards' heptathlon record; Juliette Delmotte, who set the Lafayette triple-jump record; Julia Greeley, who tied the school pole-vault record; and Jack Larson, who established the men's pole-vault record. Alexander Caba established Lafayette's indoor 200-meter record and later tied the outdoor school record.
Scott has also played a significant role in Lafayette's record-setting relay success, coaching members of school-record performances in the 4x100, 4x400, 4x800 and distance medley relay.
Among Scott's most accomplished athletes at Lafayette is Ida Moczerniuk, who broke and re-broke the program's indoor 60-meter and 200-meter records and outdoor 100-meter and 200-meter records while contributing to the school-record 4x100 relay. A multiple-time All-Patriot League performer, Moczerniuk won the Patriot League indoor 60-meter championship and represented Poland internationally as a member of its 4x100-meter relay.
Scott's coaching impact extends across virtually every event group for which he has been responsible. In addition to sprints and hurdles, he has coached all four jumps and both combined events—the heptathlon and decathlon—giving him one of the broadest event-group portfolios on the Lafayette staff.
Before arriving at Lafayette, Scott spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Missouri State, where he mentored a 2014 NCAA All-American in the triple jump and helped guide student-athletes to multiple events at the NCAA Championships. He previously coached at the University of Iowa, where his athletes competed at the NCAA Championships and established school records.
Earlier coaching stops included Ohio Northern University and the University of Central Missouri, where he worked with athletes who earned All-America honors, won conference championships and established school records.
A former sprinter at the University of Missouri, Scott holds multiple undergraduate and graduate degrees and five USTFCCCA certifications, including event-specialist certifications in sprints/hurdles/relays, jumps, throws and combined events, as well as a strength and conditioning certification. He also holds a USATF Level II certification.
In addition to coaching, Scott serves as the elected representative for the athletic department to the Administrative Council, and is the advisor to the Lafayette Fellowship of Christian Athletes Huddle.
