Jeff Liebner, an associate professor of Mathematics, is a faculty mentor for the Lafayette football program.

The Buffalo, N.Y. native is a 2002 graduate of Canisius College where he obtained a bachelor of science degree in Chemistry and Mathematics. He earned his master’s degree (2003) and doctoral degree (2009) in Statistics from Carnegie Mellon University.

Liebner first landed at Lafayette as a visiting professor for four years before signing on as an assistant professor in 2011. His teaching has expanded the statistics offerings at Lafayette, including courses in Bayesian statistics, time series and regression analysis. Liebner’s efforts led to the creation of a statistics concentration within the mathematics department.

His research has explored various applications of statistics, particularly in finance, economic forecasting, cancer detection, and science education. His special interests are in non-parametric curve fitting, Markov models and sports statistics, often working with student collaborators.

Liebner developed the popular annual cryptography competition at Lafayette, combining cipher puzzles and scavenger hunts.

Liebner resides in Palmer Township, where he can be found in his garden when he’s not playing disc golf.
