PHILADELPHIA (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette's volleyball team traveled to Philadelphia Tuesday to take on Pennsylvania but fell to the Quakers 3-0 (9-15, 8-15, 12-15) at the Palestra. The Quakers (17-6) remain undefeated against Patriot League opponents this season with previous wins recorded over Lehigh and Colgate.
Lafayette (1-18) was led by senior outside hitter Michelle Calvo (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) who ended the night with 12 kills, 15 digs and a service ace. Freshman Caroline Eshman (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) continued to make her presence known this season with a block, 10 kills and 15 digs on the night.
Senior setter Melissa Ommundsen (Northport, N.Y./Northport), playing in her third match back after sitting out two matches with a concussion, recorded 29 assists on offense while freshman Maria Kinzel (Caldwell, N.J./Caldwell) added nine digs on defense for the Leopards. Sophomore Sarah Deitsch (Norwood, N.J./Old Tappan) also helped out on defense with 10 digs.
Penn looked to Katie Brandt and Meghan Schloat for the victory as Brandt finished the night with 12 kills and 15 digs and Schloat added 39 assists and 18 digs in the Quaker victory.
Lafayette returns to Patriot League competition with a match at Holy Cross on Friday.
