ANNAPOLIS, Md. (www.lafayette.edu) - Led by senior outside hitter Erin Musser's 10 kills, the Navy volleyball team picked up its first Patriot League victory of the season Friday night with a 15-2, 15-8, 15-3 victory over Lafayette. With the victory, Navy improved to 7-10 overall and 1-2 in the league, while the Leopards fell to 1-16 and 0-4 in conference play.
Leading the way for Lafayette was senior outside hitter Michelle Calvo (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) who posted seven kills and seven digs. Junior Nicole Pepe (Rye, N.Y., Rye) posted a team-high eight digs for the Leopards, while Bethesda, Md., native Caroline Eshman (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) made a homecoming of sorts, handling the setting duties with 10.
Musser posted a team-high 10 kills, while sophomore outside hitter Erica McElroy added seven kills en route to the 3-0 win. Senior captain Megan O'Connell put down six balls out of the middle and registered a .278 hitting percentage. Her counterpart Kristen Davidson was strong in the middle, tallying five kills in 13 attempts. Sophomore Jessica Van Norman set the offense with 31 of the 36 assists, while her service game was on target, posting a team-high five aces. Leading the defense were McElroy and fellow sophomore Jamie Leverentz, who recorded nine digs apiece.
Lafayette has an entire week off before its next game. The Leopards travel to Hamilton, N.Y., on Friday, Oct. 13 to face Colgate at 7 p.m.
