Lafayette Volleyball Falls at Iona

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Leopard volleyball team took a break from Patriot League competition on Wednesday when it headed to Iona but could not overcome its close 14-16 first game loss and fell to the Lady Gaels, 3-0 (14-16, 1-15, 13-15).

Lafayette (1-23, 0-9 Patriot League) recorded a .231 attack percentage in the first game of the match and was led on the attack by senior Michelle Calvo (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) and freshman Caroline Eshman (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) who each recorded eight kills on the night. Another senior-freshman duo in Melissa Daly (Lewisberry, Pa./Red Land) and Katy Quinn (Manhasset, N.Y./Sacred Heart) helped out the Leopard attack with six kills apiece.

On the defensive end of the ball, Calvo notched a team-high 13 digs while fellow co-captain Melissa Ommundsen (Northport, N.Y./Northport) recorded nine digs to go along with her 20 assists.

Iona (15-11, 2-5 MAAC) was paced on offense by Bernadette Mearini with 15 kills, and Dannah Judge who finished the match with 23 assists. Defensively, the Lady Gaels looked to Julie Cycon who came up with 13 digs.

Lafayette closes out its home schedule with a pair of Patriot League matches this weekend. The Leopards host league-leading Bucknell on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and take to their home court again on Saturday against Colgate at 7 p.m.
