ANNAPOLIS, MD - In a battle of the Patriot League's No. 1 and No. 2 teams, Navy proved too strong for the Leopards, beating them 94-66 in front of a hostile Annapolis crowd on Wednesday. The loss snapped Lafayette's seven-game win streak and also marked its first loss this season in Patriot League play.
Navy came out on a roll in the first half using baskets from four different players to take a 17-4 lead by 15:22. The Leopards' were bothered by Navy's intense man-to-man defense, but managed to cut it to seven points, 33-26, at 5:35 on a three-pointer and a pair of free throws from Brian Burke. Navy outscored the Leopards 11-5 to end the half to take a 44-31 lead.
Stefan Ciosici led the Leopards with nine points followed by Brian Ehlers with eight in the opening half. Chris Williams and Robert Reeder paced Navy with 10 points apiece.
The second have proved to be more of the same explosive Navy offense and stifling defense. Navy led Lafayette 57-43 at 12:30 as Rob Worthington put in a layup. The Mids sealed Lafayette's fate with a 16-0 run over the next 3:24 to take a 73-43 lead.
Navy went on to a 94-66 win. Four players scored in double figures for Navy led by 20 points from Chris Williams and 19 from Sitapha Savane. Ehlers scored 18 and Ciosici added 17 to pace the Leopards.
Lafayette moves to 15-6 overall and 6-1 in the Patriot League while Navy improves to 17-5, 7-1 in the Patriot League.
Lafayette returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Holy Cross at 3:15 p.m. in a Patriot League contest.
